I’ve been thinking a lot about resiliency lately. Why it’s important, how to build it, and why it kind of sucks. Resiliency is a wonderful thing to have, it makes us stronger and better able to deal with life’s ups and downs. Problem is it usually takes the “downs” to build it. It is a wonderful thing to have as we journey through life.

Resiliency is a sign of strength. It allows us to keep going even when we don’t want to. How do I build resiliency? Well, I get to practice when things don’t work out the way I want them to. This can be anything life throws at us. A piece of art that didn’t work out how I wanted it to, a sick friend, a broken heart. Big and little disappointments alike build resiliency.

Resiliency gives me perspective. Each time I endure a situation I hate, I get a little perspective. Most things, okay…all things, are not the end of the world. The sun always comes up the next day. When I get a little distance from my disappointment or heart break I can usually see that things work out just the way they are supposed to.

I did not say, “Just the way I wanted them to.” It’s when the “supposed to” and the “wanted to” don’t match up that I have the opportunity to build my resiliency. I have to feel the feelings, walk through them, and always remember to learn from them. Counting my blessings always helps when I’m building resiliency.

Resiliency is difficult in our immediate gratification world. Sometimes we don’t allow ourselves little disappointments for practice. We have everything at our finger tips. I challenge you to embrace the things that don’t go the way you expect or want them to as an opportunity to build resilience.
